Artist Reflection

“...their eyes closed, not because they are asleep, but because they are AWAKENING

The Story Behind "Women in Meditation"

I create art for women like me—the high-achievers who feel they have to hustle harder, to keep pushing even when our bodies are whispering "rest", and our souls are screaming for stillness. Living the grind—chasing goal after goal has become my way of life. Still today, I check myself and pause—because once upon a time, I reached a breaking point where burnout became my breakdown, where I lost myself trying to keep up.

And ironically, that’s when I finally found myself.

My work is a reflection of that healing journey—portraits of women of color with their eyes closed, not because they are asleep, but because they are AWAKENING. Names like Free, Inner Peace, Rise Queen, Inner Wisdom are not just titles, they’re affirmations. They are declarations of self-worth, reminders that our power multiplies when we Pause, when we Breathe, when we Choose ourselves over the world’s expectations.

I started painting the women eyes closed out of fear—I didn’t feel ready to paint them open. But over time I realized: closed eyes don’t mean fear. They mean Focus. Reflection. Healing. These women are us, choosing to love ourselves out loud in a world that seems to only value our productivity. My art challenges the "toxic need" to be the “Strong Black Woman” all the time. Instead bloom in our femininity and rest in radical self-love.

Through meditation and mindfulness, I reclaim my peace everyday—and I choose to use my paintbrush to encourage others to do the same. Because we deserve it! And I want you to feel seen, even with your eyes closed. To stop chasing validation and embrace the beauty of wholeness within.

Because the real glow-up? It starts on the inside, beloved.
